LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND PLANNING TAKES PRECEDENCE OVER EXECUTION OF LANDSCAPE INSTALLATIONS!
This is true whether it's plants (softscape) or stone, lighting, outdoor kitchens, water features, or pools (hardscape). The principle is consistent across scale whether or not the project is a garden or spatial enhancement or a full-scale Tabula rasa.
Sometimes it's enough to adeptly articulate the landscape for the Aha Moment. Sometimes it requires a simple sketch. Other times, a full, scaled plan or 3D design is necessary. It depends on the needs and priorities of the individual customers.

Patios must be designed based on customer priorities.
Is it an intimate space or made for large get togethers with a dozen people or more? Does the patio seamlessly integrate with an outdoor pool or kitchen? Is there good "flow" between inside and outside living experience? Where is the septic and how old?
Stonewalls need to cut through the landscape in such a way as to seem age-old. Boulders must be placed just so to look like they've been there ten thousand years. Plants need to be designed in the right spot to optimize their health and performance and conform to elements and principles of design, i.e. balance, form, repetition, etc. Soils need to be analyzed and prepared properly through planning and accurate estimating for no unwanted surprises.
